The secret to a good colour match is the right equipment such as a spectrometer, the knowledge how to use it, the understanding of how colour works and a good eye.
The consumer demand and auto manufacturers need for the newest and coolest paint brings new pigments, flakes, and pearls. If that's not enough let's add different gloss levels in to the mix to get that over the top luxury look.
20 years ago there were only a handful of metallic toners in a mixing system. Pearl colors were considered "custom". Now we have over a dozen metallic, and over 20 pearl toners on our mixing system, not including the candy colours and crushed glass pigment that we are starting to see in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) paint.
The colour match process should start immediately after the car has been pre-washed, not after its taken apart and or sanded.
Matching OEM paint starts with an assessment of colour appearance. This means I'm asking myself a series of questions. For example a red car comes in we ask ourselves, "is it a solid, pearl, metallic, candy, or combination of these? Is is motleyor blotchy? Is it covered (can I see through to the primer)? How well do the bumper and plastic parts appear to match? What does the texture look like? Has it ever been painted before?
Fortunately for our customers, our technicians are kept up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends.
Black is not black! It never was.
